Choosing Who to Get Your Degree From

For those interested in getting a degree or certification online, there are an abundance of programs and institutions out there offering them. You know you want a degree and that getting it online is going to be the best way for you, but how do you decide who you should get it from? Here are a few things you should consider while choosing an online educator:

  • The curriculum: Who is offering the courses and degree that you are looking to obtain? Not every online institution will be offering the courses or degree that you want.

  • Are they accredited? Depending on why you want your degree, making sure a program is accredited can be very important. For career advancement and occupations where a degree is mandatory you will want to go with a program that has proper accreditation.

  • The educators: Is the coursework for these classes being designed by educators who are experts in their subject areas? In many cases discovering this is as easy as looking through the class schedule and finding the educators name, then looking at biographical information from the institution. Otherwise, use search engines and other sources to see if they have published works or their career biography online.

  • Tuition and Fees: How much is this going to cost? Compare the cost of tuition and fees between the various online educators you are considering. Also look into what they have to say about assistance with student grants and loans.

  • Advisement: Do they offer access to academic advisors and by what methods? Do they offer email, telephone or face to face appointments? The more advisors are available to help with charting your academic course and any problems you encounter the better.

  • Access to educators: If questions arise about material you are learning or assignments, will you have a means to contact the educator in charge of the course? Otherwise, a teaching assistant?

  • Philosophy: Nearly every institution has its own philosophy on education. Some technical and business schools for example will only hire educators to teach their courses, who have also worked in the private sector for a certain amount of time. Most institutions will have a mission or introductory statement on their website that should give you a clear idea of their philosophy of education.
