Choosing a Course of Study

So you want to take advantage of the flexibility and convenience of online learning and earn a degree, but in what? If you are a seasoned professional just looking to advance your career with a degree in your field the answer may be simple. But what if you are not? What if you want to change careers or are just starting to look for one? Asking a few simple questions about what you want can help.

  • What are you interested in? Are there any particular subjects or areas of study that grab your attention? Do you already have a passion for something? For example, do you love computers? Maybe you cannot pull your attention away from true crime and forensic shows.

  • What about aptitude? Are you naturally an excellent communicator? Or are you the person who likes to take things apart to understand how they work. Ask yourself what your talents are, write them down and see if you can match them to academic majors.

  • Is there a job out there you have been dreaming about? What do you want to do with your degree? Your dream job is out there somewhere and if you know what it is, that can help determine your course of study.

  • What areas of study are available online? Even if you think you know what you want to study, look at the complete list of available majors, you never know what you might find. Maybe there is a course of study out there you haven't heard of yet that fits you like a glove.

If you are still uncertain, talk to friends and family who have gone to college, ask about their majors and their careers. You may also consider speaking to an academic advisor from an online school or career experts that can help you determine the best course of study for someone with your interests, aptitude and goals.
